Our suggestion for a visit of Neuschwanstein Castle

map of neuschwanstein

With the car you need about 1 hour from our house to the parking area (7€). Then first the tickets for the castle have to be bought at the Ticketcenter. After that you have to walk up the usual way to the castle for about 20 minutes. I therefore expect to take a total of 2 hours from our house to the castle entrance.

Our suggestion:
To the castle via the Pöllatschlucht gorge and the Marienbrücke bridge

From the Ticket Center through the gorge to the Marienbrücke and back to the Castle entrance you need approximately at least 1 - 1½ hour !
Warning, it goes about 100 vertical meters partly on stairs uphill. See the map below!

Drive to Schwangau, park your car and pick up your tickets at the ticket centre.

Go back from the ticket centre to the square (where the public buses depart) and to car park P3.

Cross the parking lot P3 to the rear. There is a path to the "Pöllatschlucht" gorge.

Enter the canyon. High above the gorge is the Marienbrücke bridge. Follow the paved path and the stairs until you reach a gate at the top of the gorge and meet a very popular path - the way between the castle and the Marienbrücke bridge. From there it's only 5 minutes to the castle entrance. If you have still enought time, you go left (south/uphill) to the Marienbrücke bridge.

If you cross the Marienbrücke bridge, you can continue on a hiking trail for about 5 minutes (3 hairpin bends) until you reach a viewing platform. You can also continue to climb there to get beautiful views of the castle. In rain or snow it is very slippery.

After your visit of the Marienbrücke bridge, take the path back to the castle entrance. You have to be very punctual. If you still have time: There is also a covered waiting area with benches and a beautiful view 2 minutes below the castle entrance.
