King Ludwig II's Castle Neuschwanstein

Tickets

Most people come here to see the world-famous Castle Neuschwanstein. It can happen that all tickets are sold out and long waiting times are necessary. Therefore it is advisable to reserve many days in advance at Tickets Neuschwanstein
Consider for the reservation: It takes about an hour to drive from our house to the ticket center, and I'd add another hour to walk to the castle-entrance.

On the other hand, a tour of the castle's interior isn't necessarily worth the effort, so you can just stick to exploring the surrounding area.

Directions to the Parking Lot

Starting from our home, I have a nicer route to Castle Neuschwanstein than google.
Neuschwanstein has several large, expensive parking lots. After parking first visit the "Ticket-Center".

Gorge Pöllatschlucht

Pöllatschlucht
For the ascent to the castle you can also go through the "Pöllatschlucht", a gorge with waterfalls, but I would plan a ¾ hour for it or use the gorge for the way back. The gorge is often closed for safety reasons. See here. No admission.

Lake Alpsee

Alpsee
At the "Alpsee" you can swim, row or just take a walk around the lake. (1½h walking) No admission.

Tegelberg
Finally one can take the cablecar on the "Tegelberg" (www.tegelbergbahn.de) (32,50 € pP up and down in 2026). There is also a summer toboggan run. You can hike directly from the "Marienbrücke" to the Tegelberg with an Alpine hut. The summit "Branderschrofen" (1800m) can only be reached with easy climbing (I).
